Philmont Scout Ranch Base Camp to Arlington, Texas

I tried to go to bed a little before 11:00pm last night, but camp was a little too noisy to get to sleep.  At 11:30pm, I got up, packed all of my stuff, and went looking for Hampton with my van keys.  He was still in the advisors' lounge journaling.  I headed out to the van, and read a little before going to sleep on the back seat of the van around midnight.

I got up at 4:20am, stiff.  I think my body know the work was over and it could get sore now.  I walked all the way across tent city to wake up Jan, Allen, and Glenn, then had a last hot Philmont shower.  We got the crew up at 5:15am to get around for breakfast at 5:45am.  Breakfast was continental and quick.  After breakfast, we got the rest of the crews loaded, and were driving out of Philmont at 6:45am (New Mexico time).

We stopped in Logan, New Mexico, at a very nice Phillips 66 station to top off Elmer's vehicle and use the restrooms.  It was still extremely hazy.  We learned the haze was from a 300,000-acre fire in Arizona.  From Logan, we drove on to Amarillo.  On the way, we called ahead to the Big Texan Steak House to warn them a group of 32 hungry Scouts would be invading them shortly.  We got there at 12:30pm (Texas time).  The food was very good, but the service was very slow, and we finally got out of there at 2:30pm.  We filled all the vehicles up with gas, then started driving again.  We stopped in Chilicothe to fill Elmer's truck up again, then began the final leg home.  The adults started playing a trivia game between the vehicles over the radios.  Jan's gas light came on in Decatur, but he decided to push on to Fort Worth before filling up.  We filled up all the vehicles in Fort Worth, and pulled into the St. Barnabas parking lot at 8:07pm to a lot full of waiting parents, children, and friends.

We handed out physicals and crew & contingent photos, took a few pictures, then unloaded the trailers and carried crew gear up to the shed.  We finished at the church at 8:45pm, then Hampton and I took the 15-passenger van back to the rental office.  I took Hampton home, and pulled into my driveway at 9:37pm, finally home.
