Summer Camp News
Written by Elmer Jewell, Scoutmaster T445
Thursday, 20 March 2008

Troop 445 will be going to Summer Camp at Camp Pioneer in Hatfield, Arkansas the week of 13 to 19 July, 2008.

The Troop has paid $300.00 to hold reservations for 20 Scouts and six (6) Adult Leaders.

The camping fee is $195.00 for Scouts and $95.00 for Leaders. The first installment of $60.00 for each Scout is due by 1 April. Each Scout making the $60.00 payment by 1 April will receive a free Pioneer Cap. The remainder of the $195.00 is due to Pioneer by 15 May or there will be a $30.00 late fee added on for each Scout.

The Installment plan is as follows:

 SCOUTS  APRIL 1
$60.00
   APRIL 21
$60.00
   MAY 12
$75.00
   TOTAL $195.00

 ADULTS APRIL 1
$30.00
  APRIL 21
$30.00
  MAY 12
$35.00
  TOTAL $95.00

No refunds will be issued to Troops. If a Scout can not go for some reason, fees can be transferred to other Scouts if that Scout has not paid.

There will be a $30.00 contingency fee for each Scout to cover the cost of fuel for the Leaders that will be driving. This fee may be adjusted based on the price of gas prior to leaving for camp. Gas could be $4.00 a gallon at that time. The contingency fee will be due 7 July. Any left over contingency funds will be returned to the Scouts.

Camp Pioneer has divided the above Merit Badges (MBs) based on Scouting experience and physical capabilities. Some MBs require that specific requirements be accomplished prior to camp in order to complete the MB. I have listed age or other requirements that Pioneer has established. The following Merit Badges are offered:

First Year Scouts:

Basketry; First Aid; Fishing; Fish & Wildlife Management; Indian Lore; Leatherwork; Weather; Pottery; Soil and Water Conservation; Swimming; Plumbing

Second Year Scouts:

Third Year Scouts:

Climbing – Must 14 Years of Age; Emergency Preparedness; Environmental Science; Lifesaving – Must have Swimming MB ; Orienteering; Rifle Shooting – Must be 13 Years of Age or Older; Rowing - Must have Swimming MB; Shotgun Shooting - Must be 13 Years of Age or Older.  Clay pigeons are 25 cents each.; Space Exploration; Insect Study.

Additional awards and patches that Scouts can earn are:

Mile Swim - Must have Swimming MB
BSA Lifeguard - Must have Swimming MB
Mountain Backing – Must be 12 years of Age and 2nd Year Scout
Rich Mountain Hike – Must be 13 years of Age and 1st Class Scout

Pre-registration of Merit Badges is three (3) weeks prior to arriving at camp.

Scouts should buy their selected MBs Pamphlets ($3.25 to $4.25 each) at the Scout Shop and have read them prior to arriving at camp. The Troop has a few used MB Pamphlets that will be distributed on first come first serve bases.

Scouts should take at least $35.00 to camp to buy what ever in the Trading Post.

The Troop has Summer Camp scholarships available for those that need assistance in paying for camp. See me and let me know your needs.

There will be a parents meeting of all Scouts going to camp in early May to discuss equipment, clothing, medical forms and expectations of Scouts.

Parents if you have any questions see me so that you and your son can stay informed about Summer Camp.

Arlington Sportsmans Club - Saturday, March 22 PDF Print E-mail
Troop News and Announcements
Written by Elmer Jewell, Scoutmaster T445
Monday, 17 March 2008

All,

Reminder to those interested in shooting. This Saturday, 22 March, Scouts will get an opportunity to shoot at the Arlington Sportsman’s Club (ASC). This will provide Scouts an opportunity to shoot rifles (22s), shot guns, black powder rifles and bow and arrows. There will be no opportunities for Rifle or Shotgun Merit Badge requirements to be completed. This is an introductory type experience for young Scouts to learn gun safety, and a chance to shoot. The target age is 11 years old and up. There will also be Club member youth in attendance for the day.

Plan on meeting in the church parking lot, back by the shed, at 7:00 AM Saturday morning. We will depart for ASC at 7:20 AM sharp. We need to arrive at the ASC facility no later

than 8:00 AM to get a parking spot as they are expecting 300 + attendees. Eat breakfast before you show up at the church. Teenager drivers will not be allowed to drive to ASC; they must meet at the church and ride with an adult driver.

There is no cost to attend this activity.

Lunch will be provided by the ASC.  Most likely lunch will be hot dogs, chips and a drink.

Ground Rules for the day:

A Safety Meeting for all participants is scheduled at 8:30 AM.

Bring a good attitude and meet some new friends.

No younger siblings will be allowed.

Ear and eye protection will be required. If you have your own, please bring them.

No personal firearms allowed. If you need to ask, the answer will still be “NO”. The Club is providing all firearms and ammunition.

Scouts should wear Troop T-shirts with Troop caps or Scout cap, with a brim, while on Club property.

Be prepared for weather. The Club has coverings for some ranges, but they will continue to shoot except for lighting.

Every person needs to have and carry his own water bottle. Have your containers full when you show up at the church parking lot. The Troop will have a five (5) gallon cooler with ice for refills if needed. Make sure that your name is on your water container.

Scouts will be expected to be and stay in their group at all times. No roaming the property.

No guarantees that adults will have an opportunity to shoot.

Gates will be closed after Scouts have checked in. No “IN” and “OUT”

We are guest on a “LIVE RANGE” and proper behavior will be expected by all at all times.

All activities will be completed by 4:00 PM.

I will attempt to have ear and eye protection for every one. The ASC has some proactive gear, but you might have to share the eye protection.

There is a chance that we could finish shooting before 4:00 PM, so we will be returning to the church early. If that is the case, the Scouts will be calling their parents for pick up when we depart ASC property. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to return to the church.

I need a head count of those Scouts planning to go to ASC. I need an e-mail response from only those going to attend no later than Wednesday 19 March at 8:00 PM, so that I can have transportation and adult supervision available.

Elmer Jewell
